In 512 people were killed as a result of 2019 Chicago violence. This is a decrease in homicides compared to 2016-2018. Politicians and public officials that have taken credit and celebrate an already trending decrease but must keep in mind that the 2019 total is still higher than an over 10 year span of 2004-2015 annual totals.

Beyond the numbers and statistics, each and every life gone represents lost potential and a grieving family.

Additionally, the violence is a reflection of a historically broken neglectful system that places a priority on life based on zip code, financial/ social status and physical attributes.

History will judge us harshly, not those committing the violence, no – no, but of those that ignore and do nothing. However, our future is not hopeless! We must be more involved in programs that repair the broken and rebuild the damaged.  All while, not relinquishing the accountability placed on those elected to represent us.

Our path is long and treacherous but the destination is divine and glorious.

Total number of deaths are not exclusively “homicides” but reflect the inclusion of none accidental death that may involve some none explicit “unlawful” death i.e. police shootings or none determined suspicious causes of violent death.
